ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Today, County Executive Calvin Ball signed an Executive Order allowing one-time discretionary bonus payments to personnel who must report to work to perform mission critical work. The order provides a $1,500 bonus to full-time on-site personnel and $600 to those who are intermittently on-site. The Executive Order can be viewed here.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the extraordinary efforts of our workforce to keep everyone in our community safe, ensure the welfare of our residents, and provide the essential services that our community relies upon,” said Ball. “We recognize the dedication and commitment of our employees and appreciate their patience as we’ve navigated this uncertain time. We want to do what’s right and keep our workers safe as they serve our community.”

Alpha Ridge Landfill

Earlier today, Alpha Ridge Landfill announced modified operations. At this time the Alpha Ridge Landfill remains open with normal operating hours (Mon - Sat, 8am - 4pm) but should only be used by residents who do not have curbside collection service (either provided by the County or a private hauler). The landfill services are experiencing non-essential visits from residents in direct violation of Governor Hogan’s ‘Stay at Home’ Executive Order.

Columbia Testing Site

The new drive-thru testing site at the Columbia Emissions Testing Station conducted 46 more tests today, bringing the total tests this week to 76 from this site. Residents who are displaying symptoms, have a referral from a provider, and have an appointment can be tested. The testing site is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm. 

Howard County Stay-At-Home Video

The Howard County Police Department shot drone footage last week, highlighting how residents are following the stay-at-home order and avoiding gatherings. The video can be viewed here. 

County Tax Sale Postponed 
The County’s Tax Sale, originally scheduled for May 6, 2020, has been moved to August 5, 2020.

·        If you are laid off from work temporarily or if your hours are reduced due to COVID-19, you may be able to receive unemployment benefits. You can apply for unemployment insurance benefits online at https://secure-2.dllr.state.md.us/NetClaims/Welcome.aspx. or by phone between 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 410-949-0022 or 800-827-4839.
