ELLICOTT CITY – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will host a Lunar New Year Celebration at The Mall in Columbia. The celebration features more than a dozen music and dance performances and cultural demonstrations. The event is free and open to the public. Table activities will include lessons in traditional origami, calligraphy, lantern making and the art of tea.

WHY:
Lunar New Year is one of the most important traditional holidays in Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese culture. February 5, 2019 marks the beginning of Lunar Year 4717, the Year of the Pig in the Chinese Zodiac. Since 2000, Howard County’s Asian community has tripled in size and now makes up nearly 19 percent of the County’s population. A five-mile stretch of Route 40 in Ellicott City has been designated “Korean Way’ because of the 166 Korean-owned businesses concentrated in the corridor.
