Pedestrian and vehicular improvements being made on Commercial, Fair, Foundry and Washington Streets
ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County construction project to improve pedestrian access and safety, while providing vehicular traffic calming at several locations in Savage has begun. The Complete Street project will include curb and sidewalk improvements along and roadway resurfacing of Washington Street between Fair Street and Williams Street, and on Fair Street, Commercial Street and Foundry Street between Baltimore Street and Washington Street. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-November.
"This latest round of Complete Streets projects will provide safe and accessible walkways for pedestrians around Historic Savage Mill," said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. "Downtown Savage already intersects many popular trails with the Shops at Savage Mill, and these improvements will allow for more of our residents to safely walk, commute, and enjoy this wonderful area."
Signs and flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic as needed during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; however, the project’s impact on traffic flow in the area is expected to be minimal.
Additionally, while the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
The County’s Complete Streets policy strives to ensure that Howard County is a place where individuals of all backgrounds, ages and abilities can live and travel freely, safely and comfortably whether by foot, bicycle, public transportation or automobile.
