ELLICOTT CITY – A Howard County construction project to conduct test pits and soil borings near 8600 Main Street in Ellicott City is expected to begin on or about Thursday, August 22. The test pits and borings will identify underground utilities for future culvert and storm drain replacement at the site. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed within three business days.
The test pits and soil boring findings will assist in developing the final design of the 8600 Main Street Improvement project, part of Howard County Calvin Ball’s “EC Safe and Sound” plan. The improvement project involves increasing the capacity of the current 84” culvert by constructing additional culverts in order to keep more flow off Main Street.
“Our dedicated staff continue to advance our mission to keep flood water off the street in the event of another storm. Every day we are better prepared than the one before and each improvement project contributes to a more secure and successful future,” said Ball. “I want to thank every resident and business in Ellicott City for their continued support and cooperation to make our construction efficient, effective, and safe.”
At times during the project, Main Street thru traffic will shift to one lane. Flagging operations will be in place to direct motorists during construction hours, Thursday, Friday and Monday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Signs will be posted in the area to alert motorists of the construction.
While the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
