ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County construction project to extend the sidewalk along eastbound Montgomery Road from Rowanberry Drive to Timberlee Road in Elkridge, is expected to begin on or about Thursday, June 15th. This is the first part of the County’s Pedestrian Plan, WalkHoward: Moving Forward, to increase access to amenities along the US 1 corridor.
Currently, the southside sidewalk ends just east of Rowanberry Drive. This project will close the gap with an Americans with Disabilities Act compliant walking route to the next existing sidewalk on Timberlee Road. The project will also include the installation of a mid-block crossing on Montgomery Road just west of Steepridge Drive, with the new sidewalk continuing east along the northside of Montgomery Road, past Green Valley Place to Timberlee Road. The project will create a safe connection for multifamily residences south of Montgomery Road to Elkridge Elementary School and Elkridge Landing Middle School, expanding those walk zones and providing safe access to recreational features on school property.
In addition to the sidewalk installation, the project will also include the installation of a new storm water management feature on the former site of a severely deteriorated house at 7126 Montgomery Road, which was purchased by the County and then demolished in the spring of 2020. Weather permitting, this entire project is expected to be completed by the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
During construction hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic as needed, as temporary lane shifts can be expected throughout the project, especially when the mid-block crossing is constructed. Signs will also be posted in the area to alert motorists and pedestrians of the work. A recorded message at 410-313-4400 will carry details and updates.
While the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
