Expanding CPR Training in Howard County
The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services has been partnering with the Howard County Public School System since 2011 in reference to the Community CPR Program. HCDFRS and the HCPSS both envisioned changing the behavior of students to successfully become a responding bystander in a cardiac arrest situation. The goal was to have every 6th and 9th grader trained in Hands-Only CPR through their required health classes. To successfully reach that goal, the HCDFRS implemented the “train-the-trainer” model and now on a continual basis, train the health teachers in Hands-Only CPR. The health teachers then implement the CPR education into their lesson plan. This program successfully trains over 8,000 HCPSS students per school year in bystander CPR.
