The Office on Aging and Independence (OAI) is dedicated to supporting individuals living with dementia and their caregivers through education, resources, and community connections. Our programs aim to enhance quality of life, promote independence, and provide meaningful support for families navigating the challenges of dementia care in Howard County.
OAI offers a variety of dementia-friendly initiatives, including support groups, memory cafés, and educational workshops to help individuals and caregivers better understand and manage dementia.

The AD8 cognitive assessment tool is quick and simple screening that has been proven effective in recognizing early signs of dementia. It is available in several languages and can be used by an individual concerned about their cognitive health, or administered by a caregiver or loved one. Early diagnosis is important. Dementia Live

Dementia Live® is a powerful, interactive experience that immerses participants in the challenges of living with dementia. The Office on Aging and Independence provides Dementia Live trainings to staff, Fire and Rescue, police, community groups, and the public to enhance understanding, empathy, and communication with those living with dementia.
Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care Seminar
The Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Seminar provides essential training for staff, providers, and caregivers to enhance their understanding of dementia and improve care strategies. Offered by the Office on Aging and Independence, this seminar covers best practices in dementia care, communication techniques, and person-centered approaches to support individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
The Office on Aging and Independence offers social day programs for individuals with cognitive impairment and dementia, providing a safe, engaging environment with structured activities, socialization, and caregiver support. These programs enhance quality of life while offering respite for families and caregivers.
LEGO® Serious Play® for Dementia
LEGO® Serious Play® for Dementia is an innovative, hands-on program that engages individuals with dementia in creative expression and meaningful communication. Through guided activities using LEGO bricks, participants can explore memories, emotions, and ideas in a supportive and interactive environment, fostering connection and cognitive stimulation.
