Join the Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC) and local partners for a month of walk and move events called Howard County Walktober. Walking is Maryland's official exercise, so let's get moving! Find more information about the LHIC here.
If you plan to host a walk event and would like to add it to the Howard County Walktober Calendar Events page, please fill out the HoCo Walktober 2024 Interest Form. Click here to request print copies of Walktober Flyers.
Please note that the LHIC will not be hosting these events, but is promoting partner walk/move events to the community. If you are interested in collaborating with the organizers of one or more of the events on HoCo’s Walktober page, please reach out to the organizers directly.

It’s Active Aging Week. Come celebrate with free activities geared toward keeping your mind and body active! Enjoy mini fitness sessions, quick art projects, and giveaways. Sunday, October 6, 8:30am-11:00am (HCC Quad): Howard Community College 5K Challenge Race
Participate in the Howard Community College 5K Challenge Race to raise funds for student scholarships at HCC. Start and finish the race in the celebration village on HCC's beautiful Columbia campus. The unique course spans the campus with obstacles to test your strength, coordination and endurance. Sunday, October 6, 10:00am (Robinson Nature Center): Shinrin-Yoku: The Art Forest Bathing
Join a guide certified with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy for a walk along the trails to learn to engage the senses and appreciate the benefits of being immersed in a natural environment. Slowing down and spending mindful time in nature is proven to regulate your blood pressure, increase immunity, and reduce production of stress hormones. Sunday, October 13 (Downtown Columbia): Downtown Columbia Culinary Walking Tour
Footsteps to food and fun in Downtown Columbia, Maryland. A perfect way to celebrate Walktober and find your next favorite eats. Join us for our Fall 2024 Culinary Walking Tour of Downtown Columbia. Participating restaurants include: Cured, Seasons 52, Maggiano's Little Italy, Smashing Grapes, The Food Market, GrillMarx, Takumi, and The Blackwall Barn & Lodge. Upon check-in, participants will receive a Walkabout Card to take to the featured restaurants to receive their tasting portion of food and a cocktail. This is a walking event. The Color Columbia Plein Air Paint Out event will run on Saturday, October 26 at Lake Kittamaqundi and Wilde Lake, sunrise to sunset. Participating artists will set up their easels along the water and paint scenic landscapes, waterscapes, and architectural gems that will be displayed in the Columbia Art Center's Window Gallery. Join the Columbia Association for the Mini Monster kid's obstacle course challenge at Columbia Association's annual Trunk or Treat event. Kids can join in mini Halloween-themed physical activities to win prizes. There will also be lots of games and activities for everyone to enjoy. Sunday, October 27, 8:00am-10:00am (Baldwin Hall): Savage 7K Run and 1-Mile Historic Walk
Built of stone from the Little Patuxent River, Baldwin Hall has served as the community center of Savage, Maryland for over a century. Funds from the event will support upcoming projects to preserve this historic gem, such as refurbishing exterior doors and the fireplace. Please come for an autumn run or walk through our community, and enjoy music and homemade baked goods! Registration is limited to 200, so sign up early!
