ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County construction project to install sidewalks and storm drains along Northfield Road in Ellicott City, as part of Howard County’s transformational WalkHoward plan to connect the neighborhood to Northfield Elementary School and Dunloggin Middle School, will begin on or about Monday, August 19th. Phases III and IV of a four phase project call for the installation of sidewalks on the south side of Northfield Road, from the two schools to the shared driveway located near Columbia Road. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed before October 1st, 2024.

Sidewalks create neighborhood connections and provide our residents safe and healthy transportation options. To help us expand multimodal transportation in Howard County, including in our Ellicott City community, my Fiscal Year 2025 Capital Budget included $14.7 million in County funding for sidewalks, bike lanes, pathways and other Complete Streets infrastructure that makes projects like this possible. This commitment builds on our cumulative investment of more than $50 million in multimodal transportation projects during the last five years, reflecting an increase of approximately 300% since taking office in December 2018.

Signs will be posted and flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic, as temporary closures of the eastbound lane can be expected throughout the project during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Work hours will be reduced during the school year.

While the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
