ELLICOTT CITY, MD – On March 12th, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, First Lady Yumi Hogan, and Korean Counsel General Dong-gi Kim will present a unified partnership to designate a “Koreatown” in Ellicott City. “Korean Way” was established by the Hogan Administration in December 2016 and serves as the precursor to the new “Koreatown,” which will cover the total area along the five-mile stretch on Route 40 in Ellicott City. There are approximately 166 Korean businesses on Route 40, according to state data, and 12,000 Korean-Americans currently live in Howard County. Many live or operate businesses in Ellicott City, making up 24% of the city population. Designating the area as “Koreatown” would set Howard County apart as a destination for all Korean-Americans, as only a handful of locations nationally have established Koreatowns in their jurisdictions.
