Howard County Will Observe Day of Prayer in Memory of George Floyd
ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Today, County Executive Calvin Ball announced a Day of Prayer on Tuesday, June 9th in Howard County, Maryland. Residents are encouraged to join in 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence in memory of George Floyd at 10:30 a.m. George Floyd’s funeral will be held in Houston, Texas on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
“The killing of George Floyd demands justice, but it also demands that we never allow it to happen again,” said Ball. “Too often we have seen these incidents come and go without any institutional change. This time it feels different and I am optimistic that progress will be made with unified support across political, racial, and cultural lines. Howard County is one of this nation’s earliest and best model communities of diversity and inclusion, but even we are not immune from acts of hate.
I encourage all Howard County residents to watch George Floyd’s memorial services with their family or friends and continue the thoughtful and peaceful discussion on how we move forward. Whether it is over a dinner table or protesting in the streets, we must remain vigilant in finding a solution to inequity and mistreatment of minority communities.
Please join all of your Howard County neighbors as we will be pausing for 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence to reflect on George Floyd’s final moments.”
