Howard County police have charged a suspect with two counts each of first-degree assault and second-degree assault against a law enforcement officer in an incident on Aug. 16 in Jessup that resulted in a police shooting.
Donte Bernard Shaw, 31, of East Capitol Street in Washington, D.C., suffered a non-life-threatening wound and was treated and released from University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was taken into custody and is being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.
The officer involved in the shooting is a six-year veteran of the police department assigned to the repeat offender division. He has been placed on standard administrative leave during the investigation. He and one other officer suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Police learned that a group of suspects wanted on open arrest warrants from other jurisdictions had stolen a large quantity of power tools and other merchandise from Lowe’s in Elkridge. At around 3 p.m., officers located the suspects in two vehicles and followed them to Life Storage in the 8200 block of Washington Boulevard in Jessup, where they saw the suspects with the stolen goods.
When the officers confronted the vehicle driven by Shaw, it attempted to flee and rammed a police vehicle. During this confrontation, Shaw was shot. Police arrested the three other suspects, who were uninjured.
During searches of the two vehicles, police located a loaded handgun in the vehicle driven by Shaw and two loaded handguns in the other vehicle. No other shots were fired at the scene. Shaw also was charged with weapon violations, theft, and destruction of property.
Taquan Neal, 32, of Brooks Drive in District Heights, and Percy Brown, 26, of Walker Mill Road in Capitol Heights were each charged with weapon violations and theft. George Shaw, 48, of Dawn Lane in Temple Hills, was charged with theft.
