ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Columbia/Ellicott City Room at the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive in Ellicott City, to present plans for a nearby culvert and storm drain enhancement project.
“To learn about the work being done to enhance our infrastructure and keep flood water off Main Street, I encourage all residents to join us on July 16,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “Our Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan continues to make daily progress on flood mitigation and we will keep you informed and involved every step of the way.”
DPW’s Bureau of Environmental Services plans to enhance the culvert crossing in the vicinity of 8600 Main Street to increase capacity. Storm drain improvements will improve the conveyance of water from roadway into the stream. Construction is anticipated to begin in Fiscal Year 2020. This project is partially funded by a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“The West End community—just up Frederick Road from Main Street—includes families and homes, many of whom are generations old,” said Howard County Councilmember Liz Walsh. “I’m eager to see what DPW’s been planning to bring them some much needed relief from the ever-worsening flooding.”
The informal meeting will include a presentation of the project design and related details. County staff, including the project manager and the design team, will be on hand to answer any questions
Those unable to attend the meeting who would like to view the plans and/or have questions should contact Mr. Brian Cleary with the DPW’s Stormwater Management Division at 410-313-6455 or email bcleary@howardcountymd.gov.
