New fiberglass bridge to require less upkeep, making it environmentally-friendly

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks’ project to replace the red steel bridge located along the pathway loop below Centennial Park’s north pond in Ellicott City, is expected to begin on or about Monday, October 21.

“I am committed to ensuring Howard County remains a safe and healthy place for generations to come,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “The replacement of this steel bridge with fiberglass will require less upkeep and provide a more environmentally-friendly structure so that it can be enjoyed by all for many years.”

Measuring eight by 80 feet, the new bridge will be made of fiberglass and will not require painting, providing a more environmentally friendly structure. Weather permitting, the project is expected to take three to four weeks to complete.

As the bridge site will be closed during construction, detour signs will be in place to guide park visitors around the site so they may continue walking the lake loop. For an alternate route during the bridge closure, please see the detour map.

Centennial Park is a 337-acre public park that features a spectacular 54-acre man-made lake, more than seven miles of interconnected paved pathways and is home to a variety of wildlife, such as white-tailed deer, beavers, foxes, turtles, herons and many other bird species.
