ELLICOTT CITY, MD – On Thursday evening, Howard County Recreation & Parks held a Lacrosse Sendoff exhibition game at Troy Park in recognition of players who graduated from local high schools this year. Inspired by the popularity of July’s Baseball Sendoff at Blandair Park and requests from local athletes and coaches for similar events, the event gave young lacrosse players a chance to play one last game with their teammates.
“Congratulations to our graduating lacrosse players, who were able to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments with one final game,” said Howard County Government Executive Calvin Ball. “COVID-19 has disrupted all facets of our lives, and sports provide a welcome reminder of how much we can accomplish when we work together as a team and support one another. Special thank you to all our volunteer coaches and Howard County Recreation and Parks who went above and beyond players, coaches, and families’ much deserved recognition.”
“With the success of last month’s Baseball Sendoff event, we wanted to recognize other student athletes who were unfortunately deprived of their senior seasons because of the COVID-19 pandemic” said Recreation & Parks Director Raul Delerme. “It was important to us that we pay tribute to their hard work while also prioritizing safety through physical distancing and facial masks for the families who attended.”
The exhibition match, which saw HC North face off against HC South, took place at 7:00 p.m. following a welcome ceremony and individual player introduction by Howard County Recreation & Parks. Although the event is unaffiliated with the Howard County Public School System, lacrosse players and coaches from ten Howard County public high schools participated.
