ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Recreation & Parks (HCRP) has completed construction of a replacement pedestrian bridge along the pathway loop at Centennial Park. The bridge connects the west and south areas and was initially closed earlier this year. The original pedestrian bridge, which was over 25 years old, was deemed to be beyond repair by the Capital Projects team.
“Centennial Park is an essential green space that improves the quality of life of our residents and visitors,” said County Executive Calvin Ball. “This new bridge will reconnect the popular Centennial Lake loop and provides reliable infrastructure for our residents to safely walk, bike, and run. We appreciate the patience of many park visitors while this project was completed.”
The new epoxy coated, galvanized steel bridge measures ten feet by 127 feet and features slip-resistant fiberglass decking. During construction, the site also had repairs to the nearby asphalt pathway and the installation of approach railings. The project was completed by Apex Companies, LLC.
“As Howard County residents visit Centennial Park for valuable exercise and fresh air, they can now enjoy use of our new and improved walking bridge in Centennial Park” stated Recreation & Parks Director Raul Delerme. "We remind visitors to all of our parks and amenities to practice physical distancing and wear facial masks when not able to stay at least six feet apart to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
A popular destination for running, biking, fishing and more, Centennial Park is a 337-acre public park that features a 54-acre man-made lake, a 2.6-mile paved pathway that encircles the lake, and over 7 miles of interconnecting paved pathway that includes links to surrounding neighborhoods.
