ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County’s Office of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Mt. Hebron High School, 9440 Old Frederick Road (MD 99) in Ellicott City, to share the preliminary findings and recommendations from its Maryland Route 99 Corridor Investigation.

Following concerns raised by residents at last year’s public meeting for the County’s Fiscal Year 2018 Priority Letter to Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Office of Transportation launched an investigation into the safety and congestion challenges of MD 99, especially in the area between Marriottsville Road and the US 29/MD 99 intersection.

Held in coordination with MDOT’s State Highway Administration, Howard County Department of Public Works and Howard County Public School System, the investigation considered a wide variety of issues and concerns, including:

  • Traffic volumes and back ups
  • Travel times and speeds at different times of the day
  • Traffic signal operations
  • Challenges to making left turns onto MD 99 from side streets
  • Crashes
  • Impacts of school drop-off and pickup times on traffic
  • Ingress and egress at schools and school walk zones

A formal presentation will take place starting at 7:00 p.m., summarizing the findings and recommendations. After the presentation, staff members will remain on hand to answer questions and discuss the findings and recommendations with attendees.

Those unable to attend the meeting who would like to learn more about the investigation and/or have questions, should visit the Maryland Route 99 Investigation website at www.howardcountymd.gov/Departments/County-Administration/Transportation/Transportation-Projects/Maryland-Route-99-Investigation or contact the Office of Transportation at Transportation@howardcountymd.gov or call 410-313-4312.
