ELLICOTT CITY, MD – The Howard County Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold a community outreach meeting on Wednesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room #1 at the Department of Recreation & Parks headquarters, located at 7120 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia, to discuss a project to protect the County Champion Tree at Troy Park at Elkridge.
Howard County’s protection of treasured champion trees is a reflection of our commitment to protecting and enhancing our ecological resources. I encourage residents to learn more about preserving and planting trees, which promote the beauty and health of our community.
The proposed project will include the stabilization of the streambank next to a 61-inch diameter County Champion Swamp White Oak tree located east of Field #2, that is eroding and undercut. The project is expected to begin in mid-June and weather permitting, be completed by the end of June 2025.
The informal meeting will include an overview of the project scope, followed by a question-and-answer session. County staff and the project’s design consultant will be on hand to answer any questions and gather public comments.
Those unable to attend the meeting who would like to view the plans and/or have questions, should contact Mark Richmond with DPW’s Stormwater Management Division at 410-313-6413 or email msrichmond@howardcountymd.gov.
An interpreter for people who are deaf or hard of hearing will be available if requested seven working days prior to the meeting. Please call DPW at 410-313-3440 (voice) or use Relay at 7-1-1, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The project is funded through the County’s Watershed Protection and Restoration Fund.
