ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking applicants to fill vacancies on the Adult Public Guardianship Review Board, specifically an attorney, a lay person, a person with a physical disability and a physician who is not a psychiatrist. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 26, 2023.
Our Adult Public Guardianship Review Board advocates to ensure vulnerable adults have a voice concerning their day-to-day affairs as guardianship is determined. To maximize their quality of life, Board members play a pivotal role in maximizing an individual’s strengths and advancing their quality of life.
Comprised of 11 members appointed to three-year terms, the Board consists of two lay members, a psychiatrist, a representative from the County’s Commission on Aging, a professional worker in the disability field, a lawyer, a registered nurse, a person with a physical disability, a representative of a local nonprofit service organization and representative of the local department. Board members provide impartial oversight of the care and services provided for individuals awarded under public guardianship and are responsible for making recommendations to the court as to whether the public guardianship should be continued, modified or terminated.
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be a Howard County resident, meet one of the mentioned categories above and be able to attend the Board’s meetings, which are held quarterly the first Thursday of February, May, August and November.
Interested applicants should email Paul Thompson at ApplyBC@howardcountymd.gov with “Adult Public Guardianship Review Board” in the subject line and their home address and contact information in the body of the email. Included with the email, applicants should attach their resume and a brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the board. Applicants are asked not to include their contact information, i.e., home address, phone number(s) and email address, on their resume and cover letter. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for consideration. If approved, the appointment will be forwarded to the County Council for confirmation.
