ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County construction project to build a sidewalk along eastbound Whiskey Bottom Road from Homestretch Court to US 1 in Laurel, is expected to begin or about Monday, July 17th. This project is part of the County’s Pedestrian Plan to increase access to amenities along the US 1 corridor.
Currently, there is no sidewalk in the project area and eastbound Whiskey Bottom Road has no shoulder. By installing a sidewalk, this project will close the gap with an Americans with Disabilities Act compliant walking route to the next existing sidewalk on US 1. The project also includes installing a short retaining wall and drainage improvements. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by early August 2023.
During construction hours, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic, as temporary lane shifts will be in place throughout the project. Signs will also be posted in the area to alert motorists and pedestrians of the work. A recorded message at 410-313-4400 will carry details and updates.
The existing crosswalk along the south leg of US 1 at the Whiskey Bottom Road/US 1 intersection will remain available throughout the project.
While the County and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Please slow down and don’t follow too closely when traveling through a work zone. Remember, work zone safety is in your hands.
