ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is currently seeking applicants interested in serving on the Howard County Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board as a member and as an alternate. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 3, 2021.

As markets rise and fall, the Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board serves a vital role in our community by allowing residents to appeal and dispute their tax assessments. I encourage residents who are knowledgeable and willing to serve to apply.

Calvin Ball
Howard County Executive

The Board consists of three members and one alternate who serve three-year terms, and review appeals from county residents who disagree with their property tax assessment assessed by the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation. Appeals include real property values and assessments, credits for elderly or disabled renters, credits for homeowners/elderly and disabled homeowners, credits for real property leased to a religious group or religious organization, the value of easements, or rejection of an application for a property exemption.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be Howard County residents, may not be actively engaged in real estate sales or appraisals and be able to attend the Board’s meetings which are held three to four times a month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Howard County District Court, 3451 Court House Drive in Ellicott City. Board members are paid $25 an hour.

Applicants should send a resume and brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the Commission to Kimberly Pruim either by email to kpruim@howardcountymd.gov or by mail to: Howard County Government, Office of the County Executive, Attn: Kimberly Pruim, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21043. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for approval, then to the Howard County Council and finally to the Governor for confirmation.

In Maryland, local property tax assessment appeals boards were authorized in 1973 (Chapter 784, Acts of 1973). State administration of property tax assessment appeals boards began in 1976 (Chapter 657, Acts of 1976).
