ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County’s Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ) will host a public meeting on Wednesday, September 18th at the brand new East Columbia 50+ Center, to present and solicit feedback on several Gateway Master Plan options for the redevelopment of the Gateway business park as a premier Innovation District. DPZ will host two identical public meeting sessions on the 18th, the first from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and the second from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., to offer residents more than one opportunity to attend.

This plan will be the roadmap to transform Gateway into a premier regional and global destination for innovation, while creating a connected community where we can live, work and play, grow, and thrive for generations to come. We welcome community and stakeholder input on how we can deliver a dynamic, connected hub for economic growth, a high quality of life, and multi-generational living.

Since the launch of the County’s Gateway Master Plan effort in January, DPZ has worked with consultants and the Gateway Advisory Committee to create master plan options that show illustrative concepts of different design and land use possibilities over the next 10 to 30 years. These options envision the business park as an Innovation District – an area that enhances partnerships between industry, academia and government, while providing redeveloped spaces for a diverse group of residents, employees and visitors. This public meeting will provide community members an opportunity to provide feedback on these design options that, when completed, transform and enhance Gateway’s existing assets to create a vibrant, walkable community.

At this meeting, we will look at different arrangements for public spaces, street network designs and other land uses that may help create a distinct sense of place in Gateway. We are excited to share these illustrative concepts with the community, hear their feedback and develop a master plan that creates new opportunities for innovation and residential and employment growth.

The public meeting will also highlight employment growth opportunities based on Gateway’s industry strengths. The business park offers an opportunity to facilitate innovation through growth of targeted sectors, attraction of new employers and the creation of collaborative work environments.

“The redevelopment of Gateway represents a significant opportunity for economic growth and enhanced quality of life in Howard County,” said Jennifer Jones, CEO, Howard County Economic Development Authority. “This project has the potential to create new jobs, attract businesses and provide amenities that will benefit our entire community. I strongly encourage all residents to participate in the upcoming public meeting on September 18th. Your feedback will play a vital role in ensuring that the Gateway redevelopment maximizes economic benefits while preserving the character and values that make Howard County special. Together, we can create a thriving, sustainable future for Gateway and for all of Howard County.”
