“Deputy Chief Alliger brings years of knowledge and experience from within HCDFRS to the role of deputy chief,” said Fire Chief Louis Winston. “His passion for mentorship, commitment to building regional partnerships, and strategic mindset will help lead our already great department into the future.”

Alliger, whose appointment becomes effective on Monday, July 15, has served the department for 27 years, rising through the ranks from Firefighter to Assistant Chief. He has led the department’s Office of the Fire Marshal, Emergency Services Bureau, and Logistics Bureau. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science Management from the American Public University System.

“With passion, precision, commitment, dedication and courage, the brave public servants of our Department of Fire and Rescue Services are some of the best in the field, and Deputy Chief Alliger is no exception,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “With nearly three decades of experience, Deputy Chief Alliger brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his new role, that I know will help further propel the department further in its mission to educate, protect and serve all who live, work, play, grow, and thrive in our great county.”

A long-time resident of Howard County, Alliger is passionate about serving the community where he lives and works. Within the department, he has served as a Trustee of the Howard County Professional Fire Officers Association and the Vice President of the IAFF Local 2000.

“Having been a county resident since 1979 and a part of the county’s fire service for decades, being appointed as a Deputy Chief at HCDFRS is truly one of the highest honors of my career,” said Deputy Chief Alliger. “Howard County is a great place to live and work. At HCDFRS, we employ some of the best in our field, both civilian and uniformed, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to represent them in this new role, thanks to the trust placed in me by Fire Chief Louis Winston and County Executive Ball.”

In addition to the appointment of Deputy Chief Alliger, the department announced the promotion of 34 other department personnel, including four Assistant Chiefs, also effective July 15.
