To ensure that Howard County residents have fully functioning smoke alarms installed in their homes, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services offers free home safety checks at residential properties in Howard County.
During safety checks, a member of our team will review your home's smoke alarms and make recommendations for making your home safer. For residents who are Deaf or hard of hearing, we can assist with custom smoke alarm solutions for your home (requires appropriate medical documentation through our application process).
In specific circumstances, firefighters will install a battery-operated smoke alarm(s) within a home during a safety check with permission from the resident. This typically happens if the resident is unable to purchase or replace an alarm due to economic hardship or due to other extenuating circumstances. The installation of alarms in these instances is for life-safety, not to satisfy building code.
