ELLICOTT CITY, MD – A Howard County project to conduct test pitting to locate existing underground water, sewer, gas and communication utility lines near the intersection of Main Street and Maryland Avenue and a portion of Tiber Alley is expected to begin Monday, April 27. Test pitting involves careful excavation of the ground over the utility lines to verify and obtain the actual locations of the lines.
"Amid the COVID-19 response our critical work on the Ellicott City Safe and Sound plan continues," said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. "This work is part of the design effort to construct the Maryland Avenue culverts and mitigate future flooding, and we're thankful to our Department of Public Works and crews who are ensuring this process moves forward."
The testing is part of the ongoing design effort to construct the Maryland Avenue culverts underneath the CSX railroad that will convey large flood flows from the Tiber Branch to the Patapsco River. Weather permitting, the testing is expected to take one week to complete.
Residents and businesses in the area can expect to hear loud noises at times during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., as the equipment utilized can be noisy. In addition, signs will be posted and flagging operations will be in place as temporary lane shifts can be expected along Maryland Avenue between Main Street and St. Paul Street.
This project is a part of the County’s Ellicott City ‘Safe and Sound’ plan. To learn more about this plan, visit www.ecsafeandsound.org.
