ELLICOTT CITY, MD – Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking dedicated applicants to represent specific openings on the Historic Preservation Commission, including individuals who live or own property in the Lawyers Hill Historic District or who have professional architectural or related experience. The deadline to apply is Thursday, April 17th.

"The Historic Preservation Commission serves an important role in guiding the future of our historic districts and historic properties throughout the County,” said Ball. “With the group’s input, we are ensuring that these areas can serve modern needs while protecting the meaningful past they represent. I invite community members to volunteer their time and expertise through this commission.”

Comprised of seven members, the Commission’s responsibilities include reviewing applications for alterations to historic structures, providing advisory comments on subdivision and site development plans for historic structures, providing advice on historical resources, reviewing the historic tax credit program, and updating the historic sites inventory, among other duties outlined by County Code.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be a Howard County resident, live or own property in the Lawyers Hill Historic District or who have architectural experience or professional experience in the architectural field preferred, meet the qualifications of the Commission, and be able to attend the Commission’s meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the George Howard Building in Ellicott City, as well as virtual.

Interested applicants should complete an application online by visiting www.howardcountymd.gov/applybc and selecting “Historic Preservation Commission” in the form. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for consideration. If approved, the appointment will be forwarded to the County Council for confirmation.
