Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and the Howard County Health Department have released guidance for the community on staying safe during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. The guidance stems directly from recommendations made by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

VM Services, a storefront selling cellular phones, phone plans, wire transfers and more, is moving into 1,643 square feet of the Long Reach Village Center, as part of the Long Reach Rising Revitalization project led by Howard County.

Today, County Executive Calvin Ball celebrated the ribbon cutting and official opening of the Vivian C. ‘Millie’ Bailey Neighborhood Square in Downtown Columbia at Lake Kittamaqundi, named after World War II veteran and community leader Vivian ‘Millie’ Bailey.

This grant from the Center for Tech and Civic Life comes from a $400 million donation from Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg to promote safe and reliable voting around the nation and provide Board of Elections officials with additional funds for staffing, training and equipment necessary to ensure a fair and equitable election.

The second phase of a Howard County construction project to rehabilitate an aging sewer main along a portion of Frederick Road in Ellicott City has begun. This phase of the project will include the relining of approximately 2,000 linear feet of 12-inch concrete sewer line, and manhole rehabilitation along the 8600 and 8700 blocks of Frederick Road.

Howard County’s Department of Public Works will hold a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, November 10th to present plans for an outfall stabilization project along Carrigan Drive in Ellicott City.

This week marks the 10th annual Economic Development Week, sponsored by the Maryland Economic Development Association.

Howard County's Bureau of Environmental Services recently submitted its annual Community Rating System (CRS) recertification to the National Flood Insurance Program. To participate in the CRS incentive program and earn discounted rates for residential flood insurance, communities confirm annually that they are performing necessary flood mitigation efforts to protect their communities.

On November 12th, Howard County’s Department of Public Works will hold a virtual public meeting to present plans for the installation of a mid-block crossing on Main Street in Ellicott City.

Today, County Executive Calvin Ball announced $1.5 million in Rise to the Challenge grants to 40 Howard County nonprofits.

The project is expected to begin on or about Thursday, October 22 and during the work, Woodbine Morgan Road will be closed to thru traffic. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-November. 

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking entrees for the County’s Department of Community Resources and Services and Commission on Disabilities Art Contest, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The DEADLINE for entrees is 11:59 p.m., Monday, November 30th.

A Howard County construction project to restore and stabilize approximately 1,200 linear feet of stream channel near the 3300 block of Rogers Avenue in Ellicott City that has been heavily impacted by storm water and eroded significantly, is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, October 19. The project is not expected to impact the flow of vehicular traffic in the area.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is encouraging residents to celebrate and honor Howard County’s first Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 12th. Ball announced last month that Howard County would recognize the holiday in place of Columbus Day moving forward.

The native plant sale is part of the Seeds of Change program, providing education and vocational training to detention center inmates to grow and maintain a native plant nursery. The plant sale is open Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The Howard County Department of Community Resources and Services will host its 10th annual coat giveaway for residents on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the North Laurel 50 + Center lower Park Pavilion, located at 9411 Whiskey Bottom Rd. in Laurel beginning at 10:00 a.m.

A developer project to reconstruct a portion of Old Frederick Road and relocate the water main near the entrance to the Patapsco Crossing development in Ellicott City, is expected to begin on Friday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. During the project, a portion of Old Frederick Road between North Rogers Avenue and Howard Run Drive will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Today, County Executive Calvin Ball announced that a total of $109,185,000 of Refunding bonds were sold this week. This year Howard County saw significant savings compared to previous years, with an overall 1.68% interest rate and savings of $8.6 million.

The Howard County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission is seeking nominations for its annual “Living the Dream” Award and student entrants for its 2020 essay, oratory and poster contests. The deadline for award nominations and contest entrees is 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 30th.
